This hand made (wheel-thrown) vessel was has been through a firing process called Raku. In essence, when Raku firing, the pots need to be taken out of the kiln glowing red hot at 1800 degrees fahrenheit (1000 degrees C), they are then placed in a metal can with flammable material, ie: paper, pine needles or leaves which will then combust.
Once the pot is placed in the can and combustion occurs a tight lid then covers the can. Once the fire inside the metal can has burned up oxygen, it creates a reduction in atmosphere and thus causes the glaze to have this shiny metallic look.
This vase in intended for decorative use only.
All of my work is made in South Lake Tahoe, starting with a ball of clay.
